Mr Greed , Graphs and Heart Ache!

Few drops of sweat on his forehead seem to be irritating him. Lying on the bed of that hospital, he was just looking up at the noisy rotating fan ...as fan rotated.. so as his thoughts …His name was Mr Greed …
It was not a major health catastrophe, but what made him to become unconscious after looking at that piece of paper was something to be noted…
Even though Often hobnobbing with his middle aged friends over the Martini in a good hotel was indicator of his affluence, it was not the actual thing ….Mr Greed was from middle class ..and was often lured by talks on fast money ….even the thoughts of casinos were in his mind ….
‘I am not a spend thrift’….. Often Mr Greed said to himself only to console his mind over mounting credit bills ….each time his phone rang he thought of a credit agent who is ready to give him his peace of mind.
All the time he told to himself and sometimes to one of his close friend , that he wants to do something …in life ..we are heading towards a ‘consumerist society’.. he often murmured , observing people coming out of the posh shopping malls with hand full of goodies .

One fine day Mr Greed met this guy who introduced himself as Mr M . Mr M Always roamed with high end mobile and talked about money only in terms of lakhs of rupees. Both met and decided to have a coffee in a near by café . All Mr Greed did was to take the serious note …some of them were mental notes and some of them he jotted down on a paper .

Mr Greed’s face was brimming with new hopes and was bit confident too , ‘I would have thought this long back !’ he was murmuring and walked through the lane fast and told to himself “ god bless Mr M !!
Few days down the line Mr Greed was bit happy ..’I will repay all my debt and never fall to bad trap called debt again’ …he dreamed.. Things were happening well …But …….
As that dreaded day, Mr Greed thought it is just another happy day for him…..but time was ticking …Mr Greed and his friend were sitting with tea and discussing about a new movie …..
Suddenly Mr Greed got a call around 11 AM and as soon he got the call he screamed “what ? ..are u serious “ ??
Within a minute Mr Greed told to his friend “ oh ! no !! oh no !! my god !!” and fell down on chair …his friend was aghast ..He asked him what happened and he complained about chest pain ….his friend gave him glass of water and immediately drove him to a nearby hospital …
Mr Greed was conscious but he had heart ache ….he never told what exactly happened …to his friend ..
They were in a hospital and doctor gave him some injections and advised him for several medical tests ….Greed underwent those tests for few hours …and the test results indicated his heart is out of danger ..and that his heart is safe was a message told by a doctor to Mr Greed’d friend ..
And he was happy and went to room where Mr Greed was lying on the bed …and he told his heart is safe …and gave him papers and they were his medical reports ….

As curious Mr Greed opened that cover ….and he told loudly once again and …..”oh no ! my god “..he screamed and this time he fell unconscious! ….with paper in his hand slipping away..
His friend knew that the cover Mr Greed opened was the results of ECG ( electro cardio graph ) but he wondered what happened to him … ? can he understand ECG ….No… he is not a doctor… why did he fell unconscious ….and he ran to meet the doctor ......

Perhaps his friend never knew that Mr M gave Mr Greed advice to invest in stock market to make quick money and he raised more debts to repay of his mounting debts ….and the ECG reminded him the nasty Graphs of falling Sensex !!

Thoughts ..on Creativity

The dictionary meaning of the word creativity means : “the ability to transcend traditional ideas, rules, patterns, relationships, or the like, and to create meaningful new ideas, forms, methods, interpretations, etc”.

But is that exactly what it is meant to be? I believe it is something more. I believe it is something which uniquely stems out from the combination of right and left brain, keen observation of day today life and more.

The definition of innovation by Frans Johansson (the author of book innovation Medici Effect) is “A creative idea that is realized”.

Why all of sudden there is so much brouhaha about the word innovation? I believe the answer for this question is competition. As the competition become more and more fierce, the one who does things differently will thrive. In a fast globalized world with a lot of cascading effect every where, the one who thinks agile and finds an innovative solution for the problem is the one having a competitive edge over others.

Take a popular example by the company 3M their one of the program called 3P (pollution prevent program) saved them thousands of dollars.

Take an innovative example from India. Kegg Farm (Kapur + Egg) an organization founded by Vinod Kapur which produces the Kurolier breed of chickens. You can call Vinod Kapur (people call him doctor even though he is an engineer!) as a social entrepreneur. These birds have helped nearly 7 lakh households in India. In country like India through the innovative approach like this we can address the market as described “bottom of pyramid” approach by Professor C.K Prahlad.

At the end I would like to mention Joseph Schumpeter’s “creative destruction

“a process for radical innovation as long back as 1940’s.

I believe we owe a lot to him.

I wrote this for a chronicle .. all rants and raves are welcome!

It’s all started three and a half years back. Indeed it was a long journey with her. She looked slim, even though not so sophisticated for the time, but what attracted me was that her unique look and her affable nature ... and her canorous way of calling me and waking me up ! .

As time passed she became my best buddy. She shared all my happiest moments and can
never forget to say that she was there for me to share my emotions too . Yes indeed I thought reverence to life was only because of her presence. I used to wonder how vibrant can any one’slife be in such a short span of time …

As the year passed, it was still a good journey, as always I enjoyed the journey with her. I moved to the city where I stay now and she accompanied me through-out my journey.

It is not that I was always happy with her presence, sometimes due to her presence life was so frustrating ….. She was responsible for many embarrassments too.... But the association still continued…

To my surprise it was a quite a long association, more than 2 years, until one day I found out she was ill. Ill to such an extent that she could not speak. How can I explain to any one the agony of those 8 days when she underwent major surgery, I thought she is so fragile. It was only after 8 days she was back in form … life was beautiful once again ☺

Journey continued with joy once again. But little did I know that the days were counting
down ...I was on cloud number 9 !!!

Then came that dredful dAy ......

It was raining heavily. Even though I cannot say it was a cloudburst, but the intensity of rain was something un- imaginable. I was about to travel for about 400 KM and had her company with me she as usual.

Little into the journey my sixth sense was telling me something will go wrong, but as once again I just ignored it as it was festive season I went out for shopping!

It was raining, it was an amazing downpour, and I reached a place which was crowded even on that rainy day. It was a market with a crowd and fragrance of flower and fruit. I got down at the market and walked a bit, say 40 feet, and then came the shock - I was awash - she was missing....

Quickly I realized I lost her, what a jolt …. I was quick enough to go back and check for her presence ….when I called out to her … I could hear her voice/cry for some time … but not longer .....

My only fear was that she might have landed in the hands of some ruthless criminals …..But
all my efforts to trace her failed.

I lost her forever......

I had to move on though, hence to get a NEW ONE – I had to file an FIR a missing person report – and on doing so – I have now moved on in life and settled down in life
with my new found love – N72 ….. She’s from Finland much like the love I lost – her name was 3210 she was also from Finland but born and brought up in India !!

2006 .....Is History

Year 2007 has arrived ....I am writing this ...sitting in the office , exactly after 1 hour and 22 minutes of 01/01/2007 ! ( Indian Time ) Will be the first post of the year 2007.
Well Year 2006 was not at all a great work for me in terms of professional front (not much even in personal front too !)

As per one of my friends saying ...the achievement for 2006 for me is ....few more premature grey hair ! Well .....this new year i dont have any resolutions! ( i prefer execution....??..)

But hope prevail .... So as this poem from Shri Chinmay ...

I had this doubt in my mind for the long time and it is clear now..it's about time ...that is considered equivalent of money ...more than that ....more than that ...I dont have linear image of time ...i.e is i am not good at time management ..at the cost of future ?? ....only the question of time ....cannot traverse back even for a minute ...every time i wate time ..knowingly ...mythoughts takes several squirms ...it is the most precious commodity ...still i cannot change i guess...at least for me ...

Recently I have been to my native Kumta for my cousins wedding . As usual I was walking on the way to beautiful sea shore which is located at a throw away distance from my cousins home .

While on the way I met Shivu the farmer from my village ...we were talking about Rain atterns ….

My place is located on the foot hills of western ghats on one side and on other side the

Arabean sea . So normally there is no shortage of rain fall in my place .

I asked Shivu regarding rain this time and about his crops status …

He said in recent years there is serious change in the pattern of rain fall …

He said, rain pattern is changing each year and that in “ july and august there used to be lot of rain fall " …but now days it is not the case …

He said …this year there was shortage of rain fall during seeding …

And he also observed that …. Now there is no consistency in rail fall ... few days

There wont be any rain and next few days ....it will be like a cloud burst …

Overall it is now like this : “ Intensity of rain fall increased many folds and duration of rain fall reduced drastically …”

Is that “ perils of prosperity “ ??

‘Real Experience ‘ of Real Estate …….

We knew it 40 days ago , that we have to vacate the room …but me and MG ..popularly known as Moji were least worried …. While I was busy as usual with the ET and ABAP and business reading …Moji was sportive forever … He played cricket ,Experienced a sojourn to kerala !! and we never thought …we need to vacate…

Then came the call …even though owner uncle told …we are as usual…least worried …

Then came the month of May!! Still no worries ..I went to home for 4 days!! …never thought after coming back … we will be homeless destitutes!!!

The real action started on 8th of May with Real Estate agents!!

It was a real experience of real estate …Moji's agent showed some of the “posh “ houses in chamarajpet …

A house in slum with 50,000 Rs advance!!
A house with tyres outside the door !!

Finally found one near vidyapeeth circle and will shift there on 14th of May ..
Hope we will do it on time !!!

After all a neat lesson ….never procastinate anything !!

I have understood few things by observation and going through that phase ...

1) You need to have strong will to achieve anything in life...evening if i think i will finish it, i should ...may sound gibberishthought but if i think little bit on it it, it is the basicthing ( will). If there is something called "Execution" it is because of will ( plan , and how it is done are strategies....)

2)Well something which is irreversible is absolutely "TIME" ...one you waste it ...gone...will feel like a "Loser in Life"..

3) Grey cells needs exercise !! true stuff... more you keep it idle the more it will "resist" ,, ys resist to change ...

it is the most valuable stuff...absolutely.... After all, as Akio Morita said

An awsome work by Robin Sharma!! After going through the book Quicklyfound some thing on TIME , He says it is the most valuable commodity!!

But one thing is sure I AM WASTING TIME ......TIME OF MY LIFE.....One or the other way i am wasting it ....knowingly ....

An email from Nigerian Bank saying that u have won the million dollar in a lottery and will ask the details about ur bank details...
If u feel and if u give the details and the effect ...u have been phished... A recent report from Japan where police arrested few people on the case of phishing..... their crime they designed a website imitating Yahoo! and their site name was Yafoo!
Phishing:- The act of sending an e-mail to a user falsely claiming to be an established legitimate enterprise in an attempt to scam the user into surrendering private information that will be used for identity theft.
Also called as brand spoofing .... a threat to brands ..
I dont know whether our cyber law has mentioned about it or not!!
but rate at which phishing is done is bit alarming!!!...
so be aware if u get a mail saying that u have won million dollars in a lottery...

I followed flock of 100 odd sheeps and i was not aware of the soap opera ...100 odd went inside a room not so big ..they pushed me bcz they wanted to sit..
i was too curious...there were power fluctuations..

already protogonists were sitting and watching that huge number of 'talented people' like us coming in...i hope they never imagined that india is so huge...and they appreciated our 'efforts'...every body were waving their heads and were happy...

Then there was one projector ready ... a clown with the tie has arrived ..there were some vicarious smiles and pleasures...he wanted to make that drama as curious as possible...

He started ....'we have nominations and several criterias...suddenly there was a jolt from one big bellyed uncle...
He came and 'explained' with his scintillated speech...
and one more interrupted and said : ' see all of u are stars ...but we have to 'recognize' 'bright stars'...and
crowd applauded him loudly.... Thaliya thaliya thaliya...

It happened as i thought ...my wild imaginations were reality and that fun i had was infinite...
And the clown continued.....and told we have three nominations for month of jan...asked any guesses for CD...silence ...and finally announced 'xyz' !! there was photo of that chap...

process continued... and the 'AWARD GOES TO.....' he clicked the mouse...but no photo...
he he he thaliya....thaliya....sorry there was problem with ppt.. ...

then :Pretty nervous faces to observe ...very much excited 'creme de la creme' holding that sheet of paper ...CD and BW awards!!!
( corporate Dossier awards?? ...hmmmm) Business World Awards?? (BW) ohh god !!!!)

The Noon show was over and there were celebrations...and there were oaths ( i am sure) to get awards for the coming months..

finally monsoons have arrived......

Sunday was the usual talk to my native place friend...He was happy as well as worried...bcz he told monsoon havearrived .. there was a cloudburst at that time...

I went back to my earlier days of life ...when it rains .. it rains for 3-4 hours continously ...no power supply ... dead telephones ...life comes to a stand still... simply sit down on an easy chair and having tea ,observing that down pour ...and reading some old books...

if sun comes out ..go to sea shore watch that gigantic waves.. and if it is sunday go for a swim near by pond ..Ahh what a life... Delighted farmers will start plouging their fields ...hoping the bumper paddy crops... As they finish their work they rush near by Tea shops ..where they will have good time ...eating some ground nuts...and reading papers .. discussing abt their farms...and many more... near by arrack shop will observe a dull business.. but not bothered bcz of permanent customers...

Last year we went for trekking during rainy seasons.. it was a thrilling experience ...trekking towards hinterland of western ghats ..oh Great experience... That red colored overflowing rivers...oh god.. As fishing activities come to a stand still on sea ...small scale fisher man will fish at rivers for daily living...

Rainy seasons are great.... i realy miss that bliss of nature....

Every where it is Thomas Friedman and his new book 'world is flat' and globalisation and role of india and china and many more.
But My favourite columnist of ET Arun Maira ,makes me scribble some thing on other face of it.. (after reading globalisation & peepal tree of ET )
I agree those words 'levelled fields' but i can see only some parts of the world is levelled and rest is still round...

After conversation with my friend yesterday night i was aghast !!
He explained me the havoc of KFD and casualties(10) around his remote village..

Let me tell u something abt KFD.. it is a disease called Kasanoor Forest Disease after the first case reported from kasanoor village of shimoga it is named after it . KFD strikes every year during summers ...in districts of Shimoga, North Kanara, and chikamagalur .

As these areas are densely covered by western ghats and people living in these remote areas have occupation of horticulture and farming and deeply associated with forset..during summers monkeys in forest will die bcz of that deadly fever and the they have small flies on their body through which the KFD virus will reach humans as result people will suffer from fever and some cases death..

The thing is that KFD is not a new disease it is reported from 1970s and no proper attention is given to prepare a treatment for it. as a result every year many people in those areas will die bcz of KFD..

If a disease strucks Delhi ( levelled field!!) it make huge news... but every year KFD cases go unreported...( i know there are more diseases like KFD in india) the people at swanky glass towers have all acess and on other side people will die due to basic aminities like healthcare..

May be, those peoples epitaph read like these...

" We all died bcz we were born in a country with 1 billion people
where primary health care is still a dream and people
in levelled fields talk about cloning".

It was one fine day of month march . I was waiting for
the konkan rail which goes from Mangalore to Goa. I was eager
to go GOA. The banners for campaigns like 'Go Goa on 365 days a holiday'
were visible every where. I was thrilled.....

So waiting for the train ...at kumta railway station ..yawning and after
some times some phirnags with huge bags came...

one guy started asking me where is 'patgol' station....i was staring at him...
...and told dont know ...
then i came to know that he was asking for ' petrol bunk '.... a typical israilian ....

finally the train came...there was huge rush for seats....

i ran and finally was successful getting in ....finally got a seat...

there were few people ...i saw evangalists were reading bible...

then i looked at the person who was sitting next to me...he was looking
very gentle and was reading
india today... he stared at me...and smiled ...it was not a
sanctimonious smile ...it was natural...i thought he will start conversation...i
had the latest issue of 'businessworld' with me..
and started reading .read for half an hour and finished few articles...
then i remember i had potato chips and tea...

then the gentlemen next to me told me he want to read 'business world'...
then i said ok...then he started asking questions to me

'what r u doing'? i told him i am studying engineering ...then he asked me
why do u study businessworld? i told him it is my hobby....
then he said ok...then he asked me, u want to do ur MBA? i told 'may be'..
he was clever and never gave me an opportunity to shoot questions...

and i started...i told him that IIMs where ultimate and they are simply great...
blabla..'
i also told him they get huge pacages and are very smart people...
i keep on bluffing and he was listening...

then came the MARGOa railway station...he returned my businessworld...
and i helped him getting down bcz he had huge luggages...

finally that moment came...i asked his name he shooked my hand gently
and itroduced him self ... " I am Mr Mathew final sem student in IIM-C'

Spectacular Spectrum , 3G and money

Imagine surfing the net with 256kbps speed and many more data related offers on ur mobile. even though we have such facility in 2G (second genaration) we have limitations. 3G makes it happen. The telecom operators in India are watching it .
Tatas offer of 1500cr for spectrum allocation and opposition by some other opearators is in news.
As the Titanic sunk 1912, people thought of regualtion of spectrum.
As spectrum is a scarce resource and one time fee which can fetch any where between 9000crore. but high one time entry fee coupled with annual licence fee may affect the end user. As Indian consumers are ( like me) price sensitive this may reduce the mobile phone penetration.
Why so much fuss about 3G ? GSM and CDMA players fighting bcz if u allocate spectrum GSM they will have first mover advantage and the same with respect to CDMA . As the price of handheld devices go down the demand for spectrum will increase. So wait and watch !!

i think for some extent .....judas inside me makes me un happy? NO ....i dont like there presence.....

including 'self exaggeration of survival of fittest' to social isolation ....to atomic life....i realy dont understand ...

I am under pressure .....cassandras inside saying that u r entering the hell..

Roaming around the avenue road on sundays is a pleasure to me ...as soon as i get down near mysore bank i can hear those sounds 'hattu rupai(10rs),huttu rupai'...i will start looking those temporary sunday book heaps and start looking at the books ....some times rare catches for Rs10 ...then again move to next vendor ..
yesterday was not so fruitful..i thought i will buy best seller 'BLINK' but then dropped idea . let me finish those i have started ...

then from avenue road a walk towards majestic ...watching many serious as well as funny things and moving in between the floating population and scared .. ...bcz there was pushing by strong animals while moving, and i immedietly remembered Charles darvin..
and for me it was 'bharat darshan'....bcz i could hear hindi,kannada,tamil,telugu,marathi,punjabi,bangali and many other languages i couldn't recognise.....

'fresher' brand in many companies constitute major work force.. while recruiting they show fancy PPTs and 'catch them young ...." like statements , and once they enter then ur growth depends upon many factors ....many times as u feel something is wrong ...( i am talking abt desi biggies...not to mention any names) and u come to know that ur work is not recognised ....then u will try to 'adopt' the techniques ( like C.Y.A).... or quit and hop...

and crib ( like me) and grow older ...and our desi attitude ,if u have 'more experience' u think u have something that can change or disrupt the some ones path ....so wrong assumption....

The Low Power Designs are changing the ergonomics day by day.

The design of transisotrs by Thomas Baredeen and Shockley was the first step which took place nearly 58 years ago. These tiny transistors caused the death of vaccum tubes. Now There are billion no of transistors in Pentium processsors.
Next thing may be Nano computing ...So the people from 3000 SAND HILL ROAD California are watching closely on nano computing....

So the success of I-POD and AIBO .

The sucess of these tiny gizmos will lead to constant improvements ?
Or they are reverse engineered in such a way that the original design is altered and unrecognized...people call it 'creative imitation'....
